CJRO News April 17 to April 24, 2023

Updated: Apr 18

Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from Embrun.

The Kin Club of Russell just announced it has surpassed its former largest draw which raised over $968,000 for charities in 50 weeks. This time in 41 weeks the current lottery has raised over $1 million for local charities and it’s still growing. The six charities are: Good Neighbours Food Bank, Kin Club of Russell’s Storage Centre For Local Service Clubs, Osgoode Care Centre, Valoris Foundation, Victoria’s Quilts, and the WDMH Foundation. The jackpot is now estimated at $650,000 and the weekly prize at $29,000. Purchases can be made at 26 retail locations or online at kinclubofrussell.ca.

Spring cleaning alert! A Recycling and Bottle Drive will be Saturday, May 27th from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carlsbad Springs Community Center, 6020 Piperville. Check the flyer online at CJROradio to see what you can drop off. The event started about ten years ago to divert recyclable waste like metal and electronics, to show there is less need for landfills than stated by the proponents of a proposed landfill near Carlsbad Springs. So don’t dump those valuable materials, donate them instead.

The Russell branch of the Russell Public Library is hosting three talks by Ottawa mystery writers. The first is with Michelle Young who is reading from her latest novel and discussing her writing this Thursday, April 20th at 7 p.m. You can hear my interview with Michelle on Local First. The second is with Barbara Fradkin and Mary Jane Maffini together at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 11th, featuring readings, book talk, and a Q&A. The library is at 1053 Concession St., Russell, ON, 7 p.m. The events are free and the authors will have books for sale.

To register for the Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club soccer contact Veronique Trudel at 819 743 7873. Soccer will be Mondays at 6:30 p.m. from May 15th to June 26th at Ludger Landry park, 4825 Piperville Road. Registrations will take place the first Monday (May 15th) at 6 p.m.

Also at Ludger Landry Park, if you or your organization want to participate in Forest Fest on Saturday, May 13th, contact organizers Chris White at Chris@folkzone.ca or Monica Brewer at drmonicabrewer@gmail.com. The Facebook group is forestfestfetedelaforet. You can hear my interview with Chris on Local First. CJRO will be there.

On the same date Metcalfe Village is hosting Meet Me On Main Street which we’ll have more details about as the event nears.

Be reminded that St. Andre Road in Russell Township from Séguin Street to Route 400 is closed until October 16th for bridge rehabilitation. That’s the road south of Giant Tiger.

This month we are in a transition period, including changing the News format. We will soon be hosting a separate Events Round-up with Bill McInnis as host. To get your event listed (it’s free!) within two weeks of the event or registration date send it beforehand to newscjro@gmail.com. You can hear my interview with Bill on Local First.
