A new strain of Avian Influenza has hit numerous poultry farms in Ontario, including two in South Glengarry. It can potentially spread from sick birds to humans, and has been found in Canada Geese. The symptoms of H5N1 in humans can range from very mild to severe. Symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose; muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue or tiredness; conjunctivitis (red eyes), shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, and sometimes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or seizures. Diarrhea is more common when infected with avian flu than with human flu viruses.
If you have any of these symptoms and have been around birds in the past 14 days -- especially sick or dead birds -- you're advised to tell your doctor. You can also call Telehealth Ontario at 1 866 797-0000. To report cases of sick or dead wild birds contact the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre at 1 800 673-4781. If you notice large numbers of waterfowl or poultry dying in your area, call the Eastern Ontario Health Unit at 613-933-1375 or 1 800 267-7120.
