CJRO News February 13 to February 19, 2023

Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from Embrun.


A gas explosion on Monday, February 13th, in a new Minto development in Orleans has leveled four homes under construction and damaged many surrounding houses, including occupied homes. At the time of this reporting twelve people had been injured, including two who were rescued from the rubble a few hours later. Two people were taken to a trauma centre in serious but stable condition and three were sent to hospital in stable condition. The others were treated at the scene and released. Gas in the area of Tenth Line Road at Shallow Pond Place north of Wall Road has been turned off and police are asking people to avoid the area.


The Cassel microbrewery in Casselman and the Tuque de Broue brewery in Embrun have announced they will combine their production efforts. The owner of Cassel, Mario Bourgeois, said this is not an acquisition but a consolidation of production, in a social media video. He said he is selling his equipment due to growing operating costs of the company, which was founded in 2012. As of February 2023, each establishment is brewing at approximately 50% of its capacity. Nicolas Malboeuf, owner of Tuque de Broue, said, “To ensure the continuity of the two independent companies, it is important to have a good footing.”


The annual Bradley Cup Community Hockey Tournament will take place on March 24th and 25th at the Navan Memorial Center. Five teams will compete and all proceeds will be donated to the Lions Club of Navan to support local initiatives. This event was started in 1929 and is fun for the whole family. This year again the villages and communities of Sarsfield, Vars, Navan, Orléans and Cumberland are taking part.




Navan Minor League Softball is looking for a new Chief Organizer. If you are interested in taking on this role, please contact Phil Grandmaitre at 613-794-4150.


Family Day Take & Make Kits will be available February 16th-18th at both branches (while supplies last). Kits include 2-3 books to borrow, supplies for a craft and hot chocolate! For children 2-12 years old.


The Township of Russell has a Citizen Recognition Program. Under this program, recognized individuals can receive a certificate from the mayor for significant birthdays or special events, a community award for dedicated citizens, or the key to the municipality for national and international ambassadors. Applications and nominations are accepted throughout the year.

The Vars carnival will take place on Saturday, February 25th. There will be carriage rides, curling competitions, snow painting, delicious food, campfire and an evening canteen. The VARSnaval takes place at Alcide Trudeau Park in Vars.




The Optimist Club of Carlsbad Springs announced that their annual winter carnival generated over $10,000 in profit and the virtual auction raised $4,696. The Optimist’s Board of Directors is planning several new upcoming activities for the children of the community.


The next meeting of the Carlsbad Springs Community Association will be Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome.


There will be a Valentine's Day dinner at the Sarsfield Community Center on Saturday February 18 at 6:30 p.m. Details and how to book are on the Sarsfield Community Association Facebook page.




The Wendover Country Festival is coming on Saturday, April 15th at 7 p.m. at the Lucien-Delorme Community Center in Wendover. The Alain Brisson Orchestra and Country Source will be performing. Also featuring Eric Michael Hawks, Andrew Charlebois, Erica Brighthill, Phil Denault and Todd Nolan. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. A reminder that the Belanger bridge will be closed starting February 21st and lasting until this fall. The bridge is located on County Road 8, between County Road 16 and Route 100 East, in Lemieux, in the Municipality of La Nation, for rehabilitation/construction. That is the bridge over the South Nation River between Bourget and Casselman, at the turn to Riceville.The detour will be long, so plan your route.


Russell Raiders competitive soccer registration ends this Saturday, February 18th. For more information or to register email rsclub@russellsoccer.com. No registrations will be accepted after the date.


The Kin Club of Russell announced the club’s Catch the Ace lottery has raised over half a million dollars for six local charities. Sales have surpassed a million dollars. It is currently the most exciting Catch the Ace lottery in the province. Sales continue to mount this week as the current jackpot exceeds $339,000.00 and the weekly prize is an estimated $15,000. Purchases can be made locally at 26 retail locations or online at www.kinclubofrussell.ca.


CJRO Radio is looking for a part-time Francophone journalist. The hybrid job is 20 hours per week and includes production of the weekly News, community interviews, production of vignettes, audio editing, encoding and transfer of segments, and publication.
