Fire in Metcalfe
A three-alarm fire early the morning of Monday, February 10 destroyed the Main Street Grill & Pizzeria on Victoria St. in Metcalfe. The building was burned to the ground.
The emergency call came in at 1:03 a.m. and the fire was not under control until after 3:30.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Snowmobile trails reopen in UCPR
Now that there’s enough snow on the ground, snowmobilers are relieved that the Council of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell recently said it will accept the current agreement with the Eastern Ontario Snowmobile Club. This follows a dispute between the UCPR and the snowmobile club regarding the club’s insurance. Now that it has been settled snowmobilers are again welcome on the trails owned by UCPR.
Family Fishing Weekend starts Friday
For adults and children who would like to try ice fishing but don’t have a fishing license, Family Fishing Weekend is this upcoming weekend. February 15 to 17.
There are three other times per year when residents can fish without a licence. They are Mother’s Day Weekend – May 9 to 10, Father’s Day Weekend – June 20 to 21and Family Fishing Week – July 4 to12.

The Orleans federal by-election will be held Thursday, February 27. Elections Ontario has designed an informational toolkit to promote the options, services and tools available to voters.

Calling leading girls and women in Orleans
Orleans MP Marie France Lalonde has launched the 2020 Orléans Leading Women and Girls Recognition Awards. She is seeking nominees among women and girls in Orléans who are leaders or involved in the community .
If you know someone who deserves recognition you can nominate her. Request an application form at Marie-France.Lalonde@parl.gc.ca and provide a letter of support. Both must be received before February 22, by email or in person at Lalonde’s office at 255 Centrum Boulevard.
Children’s clothing swap
A children’s clothing swap will be held at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre on Sunday, February 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Clothing donors can start shopping at 11:30 and the general public can start at 12:30. $5 per bag or for donors $3 per bag. Gently used clothes, shoes and accessories can be dropped off at the community centre from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. from now until February 20.
Registration has now opened for Porchfest in Vankleek Hill, which will be held on July 18. Musicians, porch owners and volunteers can register at porchfestvankleekhill.ca/registration. This year’s festival boasts a wide range of musical talent, a youth-friendly zone at the Arbor Gallery Cultural Centre, and both new and returning features.
Optimist Club Youth Night
A reminder. The Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club hosts a Youth Night for children aged 7 to 12 every Thursday. The program runs until the end of May, at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre, in partnership with the Carlsbad Springs Community Association.
Gym time includes soccer, badminton, dodgeball, basketball, Pac Man tag, Tic Tac Toe, and other games. Snacks are provided. To find out more, call Maureen Mackie at 613-297-6392.
Optimists seek student volunteers
