CJRO News January 17 - January 23, 2022

Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from North Russell, watching the snow pelting down.

Yes, real winter is here, and to celebrate it, the Carlsbad Springs Winter Carnival is ongoing, starting with a Winter Snow Structure Contest running until February 21st. Only residents of Carlsbad Springs, Edwards and Ramsayville are eligible. To enter snap a photo of your snow structure or snowman and send it to the Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club for a chance to win $200.

To join the virtual auction on February 4th and 5th text Marion at 613-203-6226. And of course, join the new year’s first Radio Bingo this Friday, January 21st, to kick off the Carnival.

On Saturday, March 5th there will be outdoor games for children at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre. Whatever Covid restrictions are in place then will be observed, so please register children in advance by calling 613-882-8969.

Eco East is seeking five or six persons to develop and execute a strategy to inform provincial candidates about environmental priorities, and to inform the public of candidates’ platforms. If you are interested contact ecoeastont@gmail.com.

Russell Kin Club’s Catch the Ace is also back with dozens of ticket vendors plus online sales. The first draw is this Sunday with an estimated jackpot of over $6,000. The club has announced that tickets are selling like hot cakes and expect the jackpot to climb substantially before the draw.

The Prescott-Russell Trail has officially been given a new lease on life. Late in 2021 an agreement was signed with Via Rail which will protect the trail indefinitely. It had been a concern the last couple of years, as there was a lack of political will to take on the maintenance of the trail, but that has been sorted out and the public can look forward to walking, fat biking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling on it again. ATVs are not allowed on the trail. For more on the importance of the trail, listen to my interview with the late Guy Desjardins in 2020 on Local First.

Registration for the Township of Russell public library winter programming starts this week. For events and information see the library’s Facebook page.
