CJRO News January 24 to January 30, 2022
Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from Embrun.
Let’s start with some fun news.
Last Friday’s Radio Bingo which kicked off the Carlsbad Springs Winter Carnival was a great success with double the number of previous players. With the funds from CJRO’s second license which started last October added CJRO Radio was able give $1200 each to the Vars and Carlsbad Springs Optimist Clubs. For photos submitted by listeners visit our web page.

The next license runs February 9th to April 20th and Bingo will again be held every second Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. and now includes Embrun. Profits from sales in Embrun will be given to the Embrun Optimist Club.
Congratulations go to Russell residents Rosalee and Marc Gravelle, who won the 50/50 prize of the CHEO lottery. Rosalee learned of the $1.4 million dollar win on January 5th.
Reminder to residents of Carlsbad Springs, Edwards and Ramsayville to enter the Carlsbad Springs Winter Carnival Winter Snow Structure Contest running until February 21st. To enter snap a photo of your snow structure or snowman and send it to the Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club for a chance to win $200.
On Saturday, March 5th the carnival culminates in outdoor games for children at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre. Whatever Covid restrictions are in place then will be observed, so please register children in advance by calling 613-882-8969.
To join the virtual silent auction on February 4th and 5th text Marion at 613-203-6226. Or check the Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club Facebook page. One of the prizes is a pack of ten CJRO Radio Bingo cards, a $50 value.
The big outdoor rink is now open for hockey at Harkness Park in Carlsbad Springs at 6020 Piperville Road. The puddle rink is to be used for public skating only, not hockey.
Access to the bathrooms at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre is available Tuesday to Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The first draw of the Russell Kin Club’s Catch the Ace provided a weekly prize of over $5,000. This week's Catch the Ace lottery jackpot is estimated at over $13,000, the weekly prize is estimated over $3,500. Online ticket sales end at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, January 29th. See the Kin Club of Russell’s website for how and where to buy tickets.
And now time to get serious.
The City of Ottawa is hosting the South Bear Brook Wetland Evaluation Public Information Session. It has been triggered by City Council’s approval of new urban lands. The area to be evaluated is bounded by Leitrim Road, Farmers Way, 9th Line Road, and Ramsayville Road. That is the proposed Tewin subdivision. The Public Information Session will be held virtually on Tuesday, February 8th from 6 to 8 p.m. The Ontario Government recommends wetland evaluation when development is proposed within or adjacent to wetlands that could qualify as provincially significant. The process is then approved or rejected by the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development, Mining, Natural Resources and Forestry. The process, timing and impacts to surrounding neighbourhoods will be discussed during the session. To register cut and paste the link from our text version of this broadcast or contact Councillor Catherine Kitts. Sorry I don’t have a better way right now. It’s not currently on the Engage Ottawa list. https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/public-engagement/projects/south-bear-brook-wetland-evaluation
Tenth Line Road is closed from Sweetvalley Drive to Wall Road all this week due to work by Minto installing servicing and watermain connections. Detours are in place for vehicles. Pedestrians will not be able to cut through the work zone. Those looking to travel northbound or southbound through South Orléans will need to use Mer Bleue Road or Trim Road.
Ottawa Public Health's community vaccination clinics are offering walk-ins to everyone eligible for a first, second & booster dose, including at the François Dupuis Recreation Centre (2263 Portobello Boulevard) in Cumberland Ward and at the Orléans Ruddy Family YMCA-YWCA (265 Centrum Boulevard). Walk-ins are available but not guaranteed. Appointments can be booked at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/
