CJRO News July 26 to August 1, 2021
Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from our new studio in Embrun.
The City of Ottawa has received comments on its master plan from the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The MMAH comment #33 specifically says, “… the location of the ‘Tewin Lands’ does not appear to align with the City’s goal of a 15-minute community or being within 2.5 linear kilometre distance (1.9km radius) of any rapid transit. It is noted that these lands are distant from any LRT stations invested by the City and Province. Additionally, due to the proximity of the ‘Tewin Lands’ to Highway 417, future pressures on the highway (including for new interchanges) may result to accommodate the growth projected in the area. The City must be satisfied that the development is supported by the necessary infrastructure and are an efficient and cost-effective use of existing or planned infrastructure.”
I requested an interview with the Ministry but was denied, however, staff directed me to City staff to provide the MMAH comments. The whole document can be read at engage.ottawa.ca and follow the links to the official plan’s comments. I have also posted the links to the draft plan and to the comments on CJROradio.com under the News tab.
Over 71% of the Canadian population has one dose of Covid vaccine, and almost 50% have two doses as of July 25th. In Ontario persons over age 12 have an 80 per cent first dose rate and almost 65 per cent have had their second doses. With this easily-spread disease about 90 per cent of the population needs to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity.
New Covid infection rates in Ottawa and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit were at zero for many days, but both recently reported new cases, however the numbers are still in the single digits.
The Ottawa Citizen has reported that Hydro Ottawa is warning the public about a new scam. If you get a call claiming to be from Hydro Ottawa which threatens to cut off your power if you don’t pay immediately, over the phone, it’s a fake call. Hydro Ottawa does not demand immediate payment over the phone. The advice--just hang up.
