CJRO News November 14 to November 20, 2022

Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from Russell.

On November 14th Dr. Keiran Moore, Ontario’s Medical Officer of Health, begged Ontarians to wear masks in all public spaces, not only because of Covid but also due to a current wave of multiple respiratory illnesses. There is a huge rise in RSV and influenza affecting young children and babies. Any respiratory illness in an adult can be transmitted to children where it may be much more dangerous, especially in children under age four. Of 29 hospitals in Ontario which have pediatric beds all have gone to full capacity. Moore reminded the public to remember the health care system needs to be there for everybody. Most kids needing ventilator care and ICU care are very young. If you have any symptoms and you have a young child at home you should mask at home, do hand hygiene, clean surfaces and increase ventilation. At any time while out in public wear a mask around anyone vulnerable, including kids. Other doctors, including medical officers of health for Ottawa and for Eastern Ontario, are very concerned about children and infants’ health heading into most social season of the year.

The next meeting of the Carlsbad Springs Community Association is this Thursday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. at the Carlsbad Springs Community Center. All are welcome to participate. Maybe wear a mask.

This weekend, from Friday, November 18th to Sunday, November 20th, the Maple Leaf Club Christmas Market will be held at the German Club at 3928 Farmers Way in Carlsbad Springs. There will be many vendors, German food and good beer. Take-out will be available.

Last week I reported that the Russell Fire Department and the Russell Lions Club are inviting people, businesses and community groups to enter a float for the Santa Parade in Russell. At the time I had not confirmed the Embrun parade the night before, on Saturday, November 26th. The Embrun Christmas parade of lights will start at 6:30 p.m. and go up Notre Dame Street. The Russell parade will be on Sunday, November 27th, at 1:00 p.m. and go up Concession Street. Organizers of both parades invite participants. To register for Embrun send an email efdparade@outlook.com and for Russell email rfdlionschristmasparade@hotmail.com.

In Russell the St. Andrews and St. Pauls United Church is hosting a Jiggs Dinner on Saturday November 26th, at 4:30 p.m. Take out available.

Also on November 26th, Russell Rocks, a non-profit organization that raises funds for the community, is hosting its first concert at the Embrun Community Centre at 7 p.m. Attendees must be over 19. Tickets are available at Eventbrite.ca.
