Hello, bonjour, and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I’m Candice Vetter, reporting from North Russell.


The Metcalfe Fair is this weekend! For a complete schedule of the fair’s spectacular line up of events see metcalfefair.com. The fair starts Thursday with a special needs afternoon, including the midway, and the always popular demolition derby that evening. Other weekend events include plenty of live music, competitions, children’s entertainment, pet shows, exhibits, antiques including vehicles, and the horse shows this fair is known for. This Wednesday, October 5th, a candidates' debate for Osgoode Ward will be held in Carlsbad Springs. The event will take place live in the Carlsbad Springs Community Center gymnasium from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The debate will be broadcast on 107.7 FM in Carlsbad Springs, 107.9 FM in Vars and also available online (cjroradio.com) and via the Radio Player Canada app and the Tune In app. Osgoode Ward residents are invited to attend the debate. Please send your questions for applicants in advance to cjrofm@rogers.com by September 30.


The Walking Club is starting again at the Carlsbad Springs Community Center on October 3rd. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. the gym be will be buzzing with walkers. Jonathan Pitre Park in Embrun is now open at 150 Sportsplex Street. This is the first accessible park in the Township of Russell. It has an accessible play structure, swings, boat, and senior exercise equipment. Tennis courts and basketball courts will be coming but now are still closed for construction .



The Top Generation Club continues to support reducing waste and redirecting as much as possible from landfills. The club takes in and recycles or reuses four-litre milk bags, plastic bread tags, drink can aluminum tabs, used eyeglasses, used postage stamps, men’s clothing and toiletries, and many other items. The Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club has partnered with the Carlsbad Springs Community Association to offer once a week a Youth Night at the Community Center, Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. starting October 20th. This free activity is aimed at children aged 7 to 12 years old. Contact Maureen Mackie at 613 822 0301 or 613 297 6392 to register. The club says the youth nights will run from October 20th to December 15th and will likely continue January till April.


During the Optimist Club's community brunch which took place on September 25th, the new executive committee was installed with Josée Desjardins as president. The club's next community activity will be the Children's Halloween Party which will take place on Sunday October 30th.


In Metcalfe, the Community Association invites residents to celebrate with them during the Metcalfe Community Association Fall Feast on Saturday, October 15th. Tickets are $25. There will be a barbecue chicken meal and the Ben Cooper Group will be performing. Get tickets by email from metcalfe.community.association@gmail.com or call 613-979-4718.


The same day, the Richelieu Embrun club hosts the club's 50th anniversary celebrations at the Camille Piché community center at 8 rue Blais in Embrun on Saturday, October 15th. The club was founded on June 9th, 1972. This anniversary highlights fifty great years of support for youth and promotion of La Francophonie. The celebration starts at 4:30 p.m. with beverages and appetizers, followed by a four-course dinner at 6 p.m., a review of the successes of the club, and a dance party. Tickets are $120 per person. In Limoges, the Eastern Ontario Snowmobile Club is organizing a fundraiser Halloween Bash on October 29th from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Oasis RV Resort in Limoges. There will be door prizes and more. Russell Kin Club’s Catch the Ace jackpot is still climbing and now estimated at over $71,000, and the weekly prize is estimated over $4,100. Tickets are $10 and are available online and at many retail locations in the local area. There are 38 envelopes remaining.


And we’ll end with some happy news. CJRO Radio Bingo is back in October. The first Radio Bingo will be Friday, October 21st at 7 p.m. and will run every two weeks until the end of January 2023. Tickets will be on sale at Jude's Pizza in Vars, Carlsbad Variety at the corner of Russell Road and Boundary Road and Rene's Corner at the corner of Piperville and Anderson Roads. The cards are $5 each. Profits will go to the Optimist clubs in Vars and Carlsbad Springs.
