CJRO News: September 23 to September 29, 2024
Hello bonjour and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I'm Candice Vetter reporting from Embrun.
The Embrun/Russell Terry Fox Run raised $17,776 on Sunday September 15, which is down slightly from last year when over $19,000 was raised. Participants were also down but volunteer numbers were up. CJRO spoke with coordinator Donna Lafrance. There were 150 participants and 30 volunteers.

The voter information letters which were mailed to voters in Russell Township for the election of a municipal councillor have incorrect information. Late last week the municipality announced that the letters contain a warning message asking voters to update their dates of birth. This message can be ignored. The Township’s announcement said, “Rest assured that this information is indeed on file, and you will be able to vote with your date of birth and the unique PIN on your notice.” Potential voters who have not received the letter should contact the clerk’s office. The election for councillor takes place anytime online or by phone between September 26 at 9:00 a.m. and September 30 at 8:00 p.m.
The City of Ottawa has announced its fall Cleaning the Capital campaign is underway. The annual event started in 1994 as a springtime cleanup. The city’s announcement said, “due to the spring campaign’s overwhelming success an annual fall campaign was added.” Since then 1.2 million kilograms of waste has been removed from public spaces. Registration is open until October 1 and can be done online at Ottawa.ca/clean. Free kits are available.
Starting Monday, September 30 City residents will be allowed three items for garbage pickup, whether bin, bag, or large item, but the city recently announced agricultural properties will be allowed exemptions through April and May for specific farm-related, non-recyclable items. These can be brought to the Trail Road landfill free of charge and include plastic haylage wrap, baler twine, plastic drainage tile, waxed cardboard, hay, manure, compost, and grains. People disposing of diapers or home health care waste can apply for special consideration from the city. There is no limit for yard waste bags, recycling or compost.
Finally, the last agricultural fair of the season is the Metcalfe Fair, which this year runs October 3 to October 6. Metcalfe is a small community southeast of Ottawa.
