CJRO News - July 14, 2025

Hello, this is Rose Grzela and this is this week's news on CJRO Radio.

Casselman has changed its plans for expanding its water treatment plant, easing concerns among local farmers about land expropriation. Instead of building new lagoon cells, the municipality will extend its wastewater discharge period using existing infrastructure over the next 20 years.

The land near the current plant, which belonged to The Nation Municipality, was under consideration for annexation to support the expansion. Though The Nation approved the request last fall, Casselman now aims to achieve year-round continuous discharge, eliminating the need for new lagoon cells, for now.

While the threat of expansion has been paused, the municipality has not ruled it out entirely, leaving some farmers still uneasy.

The Municipality of The Nation has confirmed receiving $51,682 in funding from Ontario’s Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility. This financial support, linked to its designation as an Active Living Centre for older adults, will be used to offer a variety of programs tailored to the needs of seniors.

The activities offered will include chair yoga, line dancing, walking, and pickleball, as well as social, educational, and cultural components such as workshops, lectures, and board games, including corn hole. Mayor Francis Brière also noted that part of the funding may be used to establish a transportation service, helping older adults participate in activities beyond the municipality’s borders.

The Township of Russell is hosting the third edition of Meet Me on Main Street in Russell. The event will take place on July 15, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission to this community gathering is free. Food & beverage kiosks, local music, craft breweries, face painting, fire safety drill and outdoor fun will be available to all. New this year, a teen zone will be organized by the Teen Advisory Committee at the Russell Public Library as well as tables from community organizations.

Concession Street will be closed from Maple Street to York Crossing from 2:00 p.m. to 9 p.m., with access to pedestrians only. A detour will be in place. In case of rain, the event will take place in the Russell Arena. For more information on this event, including a list of vendors and organizations, visit www.russell.ca/MeetMe, or contact the Economic Development Department at ecodev@russell.ca.

Due to urgent culvert replacements that need to take place as soon as possible, the Dunning Road closure originally scheduled from the beginning of August until late-September has been moved up. As a result, Dunning Road from Régimbald Road to Giroux Road will now be closed from July 14 until August 22, 2025.

Pickleball enthusiasts now have a new indoor option in Embrun. Four courts are available at the Embrun Arena, located at 6 Blais Street, from June 30 to July 21, 2025. The available time slots are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The hourly rate is $15 for residents and $33 for non-residents. Unlike the outdoor courts, reservations are required. The "first come, first served" rule does not apply. To book a court, contact the staff at the Sports Dome at 613-443-9272 or visit in person at 150 Sportsplex Street in Embrun.

Here are some important dates to remember for events taking place in Russell later this year. The Russell Community Market will take place on August 10, September 14, and October 12. The Russell Fair will be held from August 14 to 17. On September 13, the Autumn in the Country Arts Festival will also take place at the Fairgrounds. Finally, on December 6, it will be the Russell Christmas Market.
