CJRO News: August 12 to August 18, 2024

Updated: Aug 13

Hello bonjour and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I'm Candice Vetter reporting from Embrun.

The Review newspaper has reported that Francis Drouin, Liberal MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell since 2015, will not run in the next federal election. The paper said Drouin told Radio-Canada he had lost his passion for politics, and the job has been difficult for his family. Drouin was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture in 2021, and has also been president of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie since 2020. CJRO tried to confirm the news directly with Drouin but has been unsuccessful.

In Russell Township prospective councillors have until this Friday, August 16 to register as candidates for the vacant Council position. So far three candidates have registered and CJRO will announce them all next week.

The Carlsbad Springs Community Association is asking people to keep an eye out for tables, black mesh chairs, a cart, radio and other equipment which has been stolen from the Community Centre on Piperville Road. The centre was built in 2011 which is when the items were purchased with the help of a grant from the Trillium Foundation. Over time things have disappeared.

The Russell Fair starts this Thursday, August 15. For more about the Fair listen to CJRO’s interview with Liz O’Gorman-Smit, president of the Russell Agricultural Society. Organizers are hoping for better weather than that which struck the Navan Fair this past weekend, when remnants of Hurricane Debby mixed with another storm from the Great Lakes bringing 60 to 80 mm of rain to the area.
