CJRO Radio News - October 13th, 2025

Updated: Oct 27

Hello, this is Manuela Dascal and you are listening to CJRO Radio local news.

On October 15th, 2025, the Ottawa city Planning and Housing Committee will debate a motion brought up by Councillor Kavanagh, who represents the urban Bay Ward. Councillor Kavanagh's motion asks for the Tewin lands to be removed as part of Ottawa’s official plan and for the Council to renounce it as part of a future urban expansion land for Ottawa.

Back in 2021 the Ontario government reviewed and approved the Tewin lands as part of a future community in south east Ottawa, adding up to 15,000 homes to the list.

The main organizations behind the Tewin project are the Algonquins of Ontario (AoO) and the Taggart corporation.  Over the past 5 years the project leaders have organized a series of community meetings and various consultations with its liaison committee, with members that represent various stakeholders, residents and community groups. There have been consultations and public meetings on the matter that informed residents on the proposed development and primary design of the new community was shared throughout the past years with local residents in open meetings that were held at the local community centre.

Over the years numerous local residents in the Piperville and Anderson Road area have clearly stood against this project stating “not in my backyard” comments,  wanting to keep their community rural.

Osgoode ward local Councillor Isabelle Skalski, who was elected in June 2025 has shared her comments via a Facebook post regarding Councillor Kavanaugh’s proposed motion to remove the project as part of Ottawa’s urban expansion plans.  She stated that Councillor Kavanaugh’s motion, framing investments in rural infrastructure as a waste of taxpayer money is an argument that threatens any other rural spending. Councillor Skalski has indicated that terminating the Tewin project would bring about an enormous legal cost, that the government should not get involved in aboriginal affairs at their level, and that decisions made by former Ottawa Councils should not be reversed or challenged as this creates business uncertainty and instability in the future.

If you are interested in participating in the next Planning and Housing Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 15, 2025  starting at 9:30 a.m. you can submit your written comments by email to the Committee Coordinator (Kelly Crozier, 613-580-2424 ext. 16875, Kelly.Crozier@ottawa.ca ). Written comments should be submitted no later than 4:00 PM on the business day before the meeting.

You may also register to speak during the meeting (in person or online via Zoom) by contacting the Committee Coordinator by phone before 4:00 PM on the business day before the meeting, or by email no later than one hour before the scheduled start time. Please provide your name, telephone number, and email address (if available). Delegations may speak for up to five minutes.

Back in late August the Ottawa City had announced that due to the extreme dry conditions, three local conservation authorities had issued low water advisories. Users of private wells were encouraged to be prudent with their water use and avoid all unnecessary watering activities, including lawn watering. South Nation Conservation has updated their low water advisory from level two to level three, meaning that flows are less than 30 per cent of their normal summer low flow and there is potential for economic harm to water takers and/or significant harm to the ecosystem.

The City of Ottawa recommends you should consult the Province of Ontario website or your local conservation authority (South Nation Conservation) if you encounter extremely low water levels in your well or if the well is at risk of running dry.
