Hello! This is Manuela Dascal and you are listening to the CJRO Radio local news.
On March 8th, 2026 for International Women’s+ Day, the Township of Russell’s Community, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee (CDEIAC) will host a free afternoon event celebrating women’s leadership and empowerment in the community.
This workshop invites women and gender‑diverse residents to connect, learn and recharge together. Moreover, keynote speaker leadership coach Dr. Bushra Khan will talk about “The Science of Influence: Why Empathy Is Your Greatest Leadership Advantage,” followed by small‑group reflection circles and a networking session where your voice matters.
Registration is required for this event, but attendance is free. For how to register and more details about this event go to the Russell Township webpage or you can listen to an interview with the event manager, Fariha Abedin on our programme “Local First”.
On Saturday, March 7, the Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club is offering children ages 2 and up (no maximum age limit) the opportunity to paint an Easter decoration (either a bunny or a chick). For toddlers up to age 5, the session will take place in the morning from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., while the second session for children ages 6 and up will take place in the afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
You must register your child before February 27th at cluboptimistecarlsbad@gmail.com and clearly indicate the child's name, age, and session. Please note that parental participation is required for children under 3 years old. If you have two children and one is older, you can register them for the first session, but not the other way around.

Casselman Municipality is inviting its residents to participate in a public survey to gather their opinions, needs, and priorities for the future of their community. Their responses will help guide municipal planning and improve services for residents. Whether it's housing, recreation, development, or quality of life, your voice matters. The survey only takes a few minutes to complete.
The deadline to participate is March 12, 2026. You can access the survey on the Casselman Municipality webpage.
Ward 20 Councillor Isabelle Skalski has outlined in her weekly newsletter several links for anyone looking for help and support when dealing with mental health and grief.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health challenges or coping with grief, know that help is available. Many residents face difficult moments, and you don’t have to navigate them alone. Local mental health services, counselling options, and grief‑support resources are available to offer guidance, comfort, and a listening ear. For anyone interested to reach out here are some of the organizations offering support:
Distress Centre of Ottawa and Region, which offers a 24/7 distress line at 613-238-3311 for emotional support and crisis assistance; Nepean Rideau Osgoode Community Resource Centre (NROCRC); Rural Ottawa Youth mental health support for rural Ottawa youth ages 12 - 24; Coalition Ottawa, for community-based crisis response supports; and PLEO, supports parents of children facing mental health challenges.

A resident of Carlsbad Springs, Gisèle Goulet has submitted a request to Councillor Isabelle Skalski for the City of Ottawa to install two bocce courts at Ludger Landry Park.
Bocce is a simple and friendly game where teams take turns throwing balls to get closest to a smaller target ball called the pallino. It is a social and enjoyable activity that requires no sudden movements and is suitable for all ages from 10 to 100.
Before submitting an official request to the City of Ottawa, the Councillor is asking the Carlsbad Springs community to provide her with a list of people who would be interested in participating. This list must include the name, street address, and phone number of potential participants.
If you are interested in joining and enjoying some fun times at Landry Park, please send your contact information as soon as possible to the following email address: giselegoulet.65@gmail.com
For more information, you can contact Gisèle Goulet at 613-822-2220.
The Vars Community Association has been working behind the scenes to bring City of Ottawa programming to Vars. The Spring Session programmes registration started on February 12 and on February 26th, residents can sign up their children for the summer programmes like robotics, 3D printing, coding and quirky creations using LEGO.
